Meet BOB
BOB, which stands for Battery Operated Bug, actually started life as GUS (Gas Using Sedan),
back in 1974. It was March 1974 to be exact, in Wolfsburg, Germany. Shortly thereafter GUS
arrived in the United States, one of the last generations of standard Volkswagen Beetles to be
imported. GUS lived a fairly typical Beetle life, seeing many owners and many different
transformations. Some say he even raced for a while, but GUS doesn't like to talk about his
past. What we do know is that he was lowered and given custom fiberglass fenders and running
boards, a rebuilt engine and transaxle. GUS sat idle for about five years, in Chico, California,
gathering dirt, rust and pine needles. Then in October 2008 he was discovered by the folks at
EV4U. GUS limped under his own power to his new home in Shasta Lake, California, weighing
only 1660 pounds, down from his original 1850 pounds in 1974. Under the ownership of EV4U,
GUS received much needed TLC. He was cleaned up, tuned up, and even polished and waxed.
GUS then started being tested, speed, braking, cornering. Then they added weight, up to 840
pounds, and tested some more. They started adding new parts, disc brakes, air shocks, heavy
duty anti-sway bar, etc. and tested some more. GUS was tested and driven for months and
thousands of miles and was enjoying a new life when in June 2009 his gasoline engine was
removed for the last time. Over the next couple of months GUS underwent a transformation
to become BOB (Battery Operated Bug). On August 5, 2009 BOB drove off under his own
power for the first time. Now it was BOB's turn to be tested. His results were compared to
GUS's, and BOB was the clean winner. Just as fast 0-60 MPH and the same top speed. BOB
handled the turns and braking well also. But BOB did it without using a single drop of gasoline
or emitting any harmful gases. As a matter of fact, BOB went 750 miles on less than $25.00
worth of electricity. BOB continued to be tested until November 2009 when they stripped him
down to the bare metal and sent him to the paint and body shop to start his extreme
makeover. BOB currently is receiving a new custom interior and looks dazzling in his shinny
new paint. Stay tuned for photos of BOB's makeover.
